The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
By: Mark Twain
It seems like I remember reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn many years ago while in school. I always thought that Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were characters. They seemed like rough little boys always in trouble in other works of Mark Twain. I rather enjoyed reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn although it took a lot longer than I anticipated. Reading the works of Mark Twain are always interesting to me.
I thought the beginning of the story was humorous. It seemed as if the author was talking directly to the audience. While reading through the story, I got the impression that Huckleberry Finn was an abused and neglected kid. That must have been why he felt so close to Jim and befriended him. I got this impression because the courts had to intervene to keep Huckleberry Finn with his father. His father seemed to neglect him when the father left for days leaving Huckleberry locked inside with no way to get out. It was probably a very good thing that he lived with Ms. Watson because she seemed to care about him and his well-being although she was strict. Whenever Huckleberry’s father found out that he had some money, he demanded to have it, but really didn’t care about him. That isn’t a very good situation for a kid and Huckleberry seemed scared of his father.
Huckleberry Finn seemed to admire Tom Sawyer and referenced him a few times throughout the story. He always wondered what Tom Sawyer would have done or thought Tom would have handled a situation a certain way. It seemed to make Huckleberry Finn feel braver when he did this.
Huckleberry Finn and Jim saw a lot of different adventures as they floated down the lake. Huckleberry Finn sometimes pretended to be someone he wasn’t’ and hid Jim because he was not white. Jim often got tickled at how clever Huckleberry Finn was when he would tell a lie to cover up Jim was with him. Huckleberry Finn seemed to care a lot about his friend Jim. Jim seemed to care a lot about Huckleberry Finn as well. Jim must have felt like family to Huckleberry because he didn’t really have any family who really cared about him.

Hello, my name is Emily. This blog was created for ENG 232 course I am taking. I enjoy reading and the English classes I am taking are opening my eyes to new types of literature. English is one of the classes that I like best. Biology... not so fun when it comes to dissecting animals. I am a mother and I have five children. So, reading to them is a important task in my daily routine. Watching my children learn to read has been a very rewarding experience too. Many of you who may read this blog may be students in this class as well or our instructor. Thanks for visiting my blog and good luck to everyone!
